CV summary
Prior to joining McAusland’s Ian served at sea initially as a Deck Officer with the Blue Star Line on conventional refrigerated / general cargo ships and later with ACT Containers on the first generation of container vessels. He moved on to short sea trades in bulk shipping and marine aggregate dredging where he obtained his Master’s certificate.
He then worked in the marine paint industry as a technical service representative and manager where he was responsible for specifying and overseeing the application of tank linings and specialist high performance marine coatings for new build and refit projects throughout the UK & Europe. After returning to sea with the Marine Society for a period where he served as Training Officer and Relief Master he then joined the Maritime Trust as technical manager for the Historic Clipper Ship CUTTY SARK where he managed and oversaw the first major renovation of the ship’s masts and rigging since the 1950’s. During this period, he gained the British Safety Council Diploma in Safety Management as part of his work in safely mixing major maritime engineering works with keeping the historic vessel open to the public. He was also responsible for arranging and managing the permanent docking of the historic vessels now on display at Chatham Historic Dockyard. In 2001 he joined the RNLI as Thames Operations Manager where he was a key player in implementing the RNLl’s new Thames Lifeboat service. Whilst with the RNLI he obtained a Lloyd’s Maritime Diploma in Marine Surveying with Merit specialising in small commercial craft.
For 26 years he was also an Executive Officer in the Royal Naval Reserve where he specialised in mine countermeasures and latterly amphibious warfare. His last appointment from 1999 — 2001 was as Commanding Officer of HMS PRESIDENT, the Royal Navy Reserve Unit in London. Over the last 10 years he has combined part time work as nautical lecturer and trainer with a wide range of general marine survey work. Ian is based in the South East.
